Dear Potential Charter School Applicant(s):
On behalf of the Macon County Board of Education, I invite you to submit a proposal to create a start-up or conversion charter school in Macon County (Alabama). Macon County is one of 12 counties in Alabama that is considered to be an impoverished county. Thus, there is a need to give children and families the best educational opportunities possible and to ensure that our young people are undergirded with the skill set to be proficient in all subjects, especially reading and math.
The Macon County Schools’ Charter Schools Request for Proposal and Application are included in this packet and released to the general public as of November 1, 2023 via our website at www.maconk12.org. Click here for proposal and application.
The applications are due back in their entirety by November 30, 2023. From there, our local review team, which may include a charter school consultant, will review applications and all decisions will be rendered by January 27, 2024. The first possible date for a charter school to open in Macon County is the 2024-2025 school year, which allows for at least one year of school planning.
The Alabama Department of Education has a Public Charter School Office and a robust website that can provide a plethora of information include frequently asked questions and several completed applications that can be used as guidance. The contact information for the state’s office is a follows:
