Stopping Child Obesity with Body Quest

August 05, 2014

Two out of three adults are overweight or obese.  One out of three children are overweight or obese.

86 children from Bullock and Macon counties participated in the Body Quest program for 17 weeks.  At the end of the 17 weeks, the students were choosing more fruits and vegetables.  A common statement among the participants was, "These vegetables taste great!".

The Body Quest initiative encourages children to make healthier food choices, like fruits and vegetables.  Body Quest is a part of the Nutrition Education Program, or NEP.

NEP helps persons eligible for food assistance make health food choices on a budget and stay physically active.

FFA State Convention

June 12, 2014

During the month of June 2014, students in the FFA Program in Macon County Public School System had the opportunity to attend their student convention in Montgomery, Alabama  at the Renaissance Hotel and Conference Center. The event was planned by Mr. Tracy Stacy, EdS who is the FFA (Future Farmers of America) Chapter Advisor. Mr. Stacy’s teacher leader in the development and coordination of the students for this summer activity was above expectation. These students will be working with Mr. Stacy all summer developing their leadership skills within the area of AgriScience, Marketing, Workforce Needs, and Community Cultivation. I am pleased with the students dedication towards this program and their career development. Equally, I am appreciative towards the teaching and learning experiences that Mr. Stacy provides his students via this extended summer learning initiative. Great things happen in Career and Technical Education in the Macon County Public School System.

We had an opportunity to expose our students to the FFA State Convention. The students participated in team building workshops, the award show for State CDE's and in the Fight the Hunger Campaign and prepared over 75'000 boxes of food that will feed over 1 million people

Makayla Alexander (Treasurer)
My experience was exciting and eye opening on possibilities to achieve.

Aliyah Stewart (V-President)
My experience at the 86th Annual FFA Conference was very exciting and informative.  I learned a lot and plan to be a part of it for the rest of my years in high school. I listened to all the achievements and awards that were given motivated me as an FFA member to be a part of more events. Having a goal and striving for nothing but success, gives you great leadership skills, which I plan to obtain more of.

KyAundra Fields
My experience at the 85 Annual FFA Convention inspired me to be more involved in my community activities, fundraising and serving my community. I had an opportunity to to participate in leadership workshops and to give back by donating to the Fight the Hunger Campaign.

Kevin Jackson (President)
I learned that you need to do what makes you happy, not what you think you may want to do. I learned new leadership techniques and how to be a team player.

Jasen Burnside (Parliamentarian)
My experience was awesome and inspiring to do more and to achieve my goals.

Javonte Grant
My experience was to learn about different colleges and the programs they have.

Sharon Uzzle
I learned different techniques and goals that we can achieve and do within my community and the world
