Philosophy of Education

Dear 6th Grade Parents and Students,

As we begin our 2021-22 school year, I wanted to introduce myself and share my Philosophy of Education. My name is Mrs. Isis McReynolds; I am a teacher, wife, student, and mother of four boys (15, 22, 24, and 26 year olds) and one grandson (2).

As an 17th year classroom teacher, I have started to develop a teaching philosophy based on my professional experiences and personal beliefs. With a clear picture of these ideas in mind, I can more thoughtfully and purposefully create a classroom that fits my style and meets the specific needs of my students.

I believe that all children learn differently, based on their individual learning style. There is not one obvious learning style per student, each student has a combination of preferred learning methods, and subject area can make a difference in that learning style. The instructor’s learning style also comes heavily into play as the instructor’s style may not match those of the students, and if the teacher does not try to individualize, the some students experience difficulty. I believe that all students need new concepts introduced in concrete and realistic methods, rather than abstractly. Children also learn by example and modeling. This applies to demonstrations of ideas and behavior. Students should also be allowed to make mistakes, and come to realize that this is part of the learning process as well. Making mistakes is not always bad, and children should be taught this. When structuring learning opportunities, I do not believe that there is one obvious correct choice. The structure must match the desired learning outcome. For instance, if the learning opportunity is for students to conduct a science experiment, this cannot be structured as a lecture with students working quietly and independently. The learning environment should be loosely structured so that students could work collaboratively and be allowed to talk, ask questions, and move about. If the learning outcome involved silent reading or independent writing, then the environment would be structured in a different manner so students could work in a quiet and independent work area. This year  I will have a flip classroom. In my class, I use  articles, visual learning aids, ipads, apple tv, Google Classroom, Google Meet, Acellus, Class Dojo, ST Math, Edmentum, Study Island, Reading Eggs, edmodo, nearpod, organized notes, charts, powerpoints/Keynote, AMSTI, MSP, SECME, A+ College, hand-on, ARI strategies, and diagrams/ modules to present course materials .

The final area of my philosophy I would like to discuss is my view towards self- improvement. I firmly believe that any good teacher remains a good student throughout life. As I a teacher, I constantly evaluate my performances in the classroom every time I teach. This includes: assessing how well I presented the material, what students’ reactions to the material were, and coming up with presentations to maintain students interest.

In sum, I strive to give all students an equal opportunity to learn by promoting intellectual diversity in the various ways it manifests itself in academia. I will conduct myself in a professional manner to create a positive learning environment where students can develop their critical think skills. I will set high standards for my students and my self.

If you have any question please feel free to call me at school 334-727-3222. I am looking forward to spending this year with you and your child. Together I feel we can make this a very successful school year for your child.

Sincerely,

Isis McReynolds
