Ms. Sullen Earns Award!

July 22, 2012

Ms. Brelinda Sullen, Principal of  Notasulga High School, was recently awarded the Designing Alabama's Civic Health Award in recognition of her contributions to civic health through her emphasis on character education at Notasulga High School, where she has been Principal for five years.

Adam Ziyad, a graduate of Notasulga High School, and Yowseph Ziyad, a senior at Notasulga High designed and printed posters to Principal Sullen as a component of the Civic Health Project coordinated by Auburn University.

"The students were proud to present the award to Mrs. Sullen," says Dr. Mark Wilson, Director of Civic Learning Initiatives for the College of Liberal Arts at Auburn University.  With help from Mobile Studio artist Dan Neil and Auburn University Landscape Architecture Professor, Jocelyn Zanzot, Macon County students made designs using statistics about civic data in Macon County, Alabama.

Congratulations, Ms. Sullen!

The posters designed by the students can be viewed here.

The Rosenwald Schools

June 19, 2012

An email announcement from Dr. McClaney, some quick thinking by Ms Carolyn Bettis and a confirmation from Katherine Carey brought Ms Bettis together with acclaimed poetess Nikki Giovanni

Ms Bettis was awarded a scholarship from The National Rosenwald Schools Foundation to attend a conference, held at Tuskegee University, on The Rosenwald Schools.

Starting in 1912, The Rosenwald Schools Project has been called, "most influential philanthropic force that came to the aid of Negroes at that time."  A partnership with Julius Rosenwald, the Chairman of Sears and Roebuck, and Booker T. Washington became the genesis of grant money providing for the construction and staffing of over 5,000 schools for African-Americans in 15 states.  One of these schools, currently under restoration, is located just outside of the City of Notasulga.

Ms Bettis said of the conference, "Meeting & talking to my favorite poet, Nikki Giovanni was great but the things I learned at last week's National Rosenwald Schools Conference held at Tuskegee University was life changing!!! This was by far THE BEST professional & personal development conference I have ever attended!! The story of what Julius Rosenwald & Booker T Washington did for the Macon County community & the world must be told! It's too amazing to be kept a secret!! I did not realize how vital Tuskegee Institute was to my community...to my being able to get an education! I have a developed a new love and respect for Tuskegee Institute/University. Even though I'm a graduate of Alabama State University, after this conference, I think I may love Tuskegee more because of Booker T. Washington's effort & vision & Julius Rosenwald's kindness & generosity."

A bit of trivia.  On Nikki Giovanni's left arm is a tattoo of Tupac Shakur, who Ms Giovanni called "The Greatest Poet of Our Time".

Retreat 2012

June 04, 2012

Macon County School System School Board members, Administrators, Teachers and support personnel met at the Kellogg Conference Center on Tuskegee University Campus to discuss and strategize how to better serve an underserved class of  student....young black males.

In an event taking place over several days, the group met (and will meet) to discuss and identify where successes are taking place and where we can take a different and better approach

Sunday afternoon, group members were confronted with flyers posted around the reception/registration area.  Each flyer displayed statistics illustrating the plight of young men of color in public education in America.  The flyers made bold, confrontational statements.  For example, the person a young black male is least likely to confide in is his father.  Next, we were treated to a film documenting the genesis of the apparent dysfunction taking place in the lives of young men in public schools in America.

A bold, award-winning documentary, 500 years later, was show, dissected and evaluated in terms of where the message of the movie applied to our young men of all ethnicities.

Then we as a group found ourselves in collaboration with each other, using each others' ears as a sounding board to identify how we can use what we have in place now to better serve our young men.

Day Two found us continuing with the same theme of raising awareness of the rich and unique legacy of central Alabama in general and Tuskegee in particular.  We left the Kellogg Conference Center for the Historical Treat to be found at the Multicultural Center of Tuskegee, founded by Civil Rights Attorney, Fred Gray and his late wife.  It was impossible to not feel both humbled and inspired when surrounded by courage documented at the Multicultural Center of Tuskegee, The Best Small Museum in the World.

The group ajourned, with anticipation of what the morrow brings...but, whatever challenges arise, that challenge will be met.

Retirement Ceremony

May 30, 2012

Macon County School employees met Wednesday morning at Booker T. Washington High School to honor retiring co-workers.  Thirty employees were honored with a breakfast retirement ceremony, with Superintendent Jacqueline A. Brooks presiding.

While we munched on a delicious breakfast, prepared by Child Nutrition, we were treated to a musical selection by Rev. Curry, Melinda Curry and Mrs. Karen Tatum.  Rev. Curry and his sister have been singing together a long time, because the harmony was beautiful.  Mrs. Tatum accompanied on piano.

Presentations were made to retirees by the Education Association of Macon County, Support Personnel of Macon County, Schools of Macon County, Family and Friends, Organization and Agencies and the Macon County Board of Education.

The program ended with another musical selection, a reading by Dr. Brooks and remarks be School Board Members.
