The Macon County School District received exciting news Monday, Oct. 27 from Tim Cook, Apple CEO Alabama native. Three schools in Macon County are the recipients of an Apple ConnectED grant.
Booker T. Washington High School, Notasulga High School and Tuskegee Public School have been selected to receive an Apple grant as part of the ConnectED program. The grant will enable the schools to provide a comprehensive one-to-one technology solution for every student and teacher, including Apple hardware, software and services.
By providing students, teachers and administrators with Apple technology, the schools will be able to enrich their classroom experience and expand opportunities for students.
“The eyes of the world will be on Macon County and our schools,” said Dr. Jacqueline Brooks, superintendent during the Oct. 27 meeting of the Macon County Board of Education. “We are three schools out of 114 schools in 29 states to receive this grant in the first round. We are blessed.”
John H. Curry, Macon County Schools Technology director, was instrumental in locating the information for the system to apply for the grant that could be in excess $1 million. That includes equipment, infrastructure upgrades and training.
“I want to thank Rev. Curry for encouraging us to apply for the funds and not losing the faith for us to continue, which was a long process,” Brooks explained. “Administrators, teachers and students were interviewed during the process and it was not easy. Plus, it had to be kept a secret.”
As a result of the grant, every teacher at these schools will receive an AppleMacBook, ipad and a television for each classroom. Also, each student in these schools will receive an ipad for their personal use. The infrastructure will be upgraded to support the new technology the schools will receive.
“This grant will have a tremendous impact on our schools and for our community,” said Brooks.
Administrators, teachers and others have been invited to Dallas in December for Apple University to receive training for the new technology.
A graduate of Auburn University and a native of Flomaton, Cook was in Montgomery Monday for induction into the Alabama Academy of Honor. He told fellow Academy members that the state took too long toward steps of equality. He says while receiving the award is humbling, there's still much more to do to improve the community (the State). It's just one reason he says Apple has donated $100 million to 114 schools across the country.
“We’ve seen what an extraordinary impact educators can have using Apple products in the classroom,” Cooks stated in a press release. “We want to be a part of the change that educators are working towards in communities across the country.
"We're going to send our education team to help them create new ways of learning. Our retail teams will bring them popular coding cams. And we're going to leverage some of the world's best minds from Apple University to create new courses.”
Area residents can see interviews of Dr. Brooks, teachers from the three schools and Curry on the Macon District’s website www.maconk12.org, or on Apple’s website at http://www.apple.com/education/connectED/
