January 21, 2017

Format your hard drive and now you're getting the "Windows cannot be installed on this drive because it's the wrong format" error...Here's what worked for me.

Resart your computer and press Shift-F10.  Type diskpart.  Type list disk.  Select the hard drive.  Type Clean.  Exit.  Now you can install your operating system.

Domain Trust has Failed

August 07, 2015

The domain doesn't trust your user's computer.  It's an easy fix.  Leave the domain and rejoin the domain and your user is back in business.   You try to log in as an administrator, but the administrator account has been disabled.  It's a Windows 7 machine, so restarting in safe mode to use the administrator account didn't carry up from XP.  Now what?  Unplug the network cable.  Have your user log in using their account and password, enable the administrator account, make sure it has a password you know and leave the domain.  Reboot, log in as administrator and join the domain.  Back in buisiness.

I'm just saying

March 14, 2015

There are many advantages to going wireless.  First of all, it's easy to set up.  It's neat.  You can move your desk to the other side of the room without having to ask Governor Bentley.  You don't have to deal with those messy, blue cables running all over the floor.

Wireless works very well if you are the only one using wireless.  The problem comes in when you have to share a wireless access point.

Wireless access points are the invisible connection to the internet.  They act like cell phone towers, signaling "here I am." to anyone and everyone within hearing range.  Hearing range is pretty good, too.  About 100 yards is a reliable estimation.  Wireless access points have a load capacity, however. The more people listening, the harder it is to hear.  Also lease times can be a problem.  A lease is like going to a popular restaurant.  While you are enjoying your meal, you can rely on your table being your table.  If you go to the rest room, the waiter won't clear your table and seat someone else before you come back. Suppose you go to the rest room and come back tomorrow?  How long should the waiter hold your table?  That's the problem with lease times.  A person will go to a building where they have connected to the wireless network, reserve a spot on the wireless network for the next 8 hours (lease time), and then leave the building.  The access point is holding their reservation and they have left the building like Elvis.

When you are using wireless you are effectively traveling the information super highway on a bus.  The more crowded the bus, the more uncomfortable the ride.  The bus gets slower and more inefficient.  The best speed you are going to get wirelessly around the Macon County School System is 54.0 mbs.  And that's if you are using wireless by yourself.  You are on the bus by yourself.  That usually isn't the case, however.  Usually, you are sharing the wireless network with a lot of other people.  Most of those people also have smart phones that use data.  To save our data, we connect to the wireless network.  We are given a lease to use the network.  Many of us have iPads and tablets.  That's another device that connects to the wireless network and another lease.  By noon, the wireless network is getting pretty crowded.

There is an expression in Architecture.  Form follows function.  The beauty of a structure is in how well it does what it was designed to do.  That's why certain structures have a beauty, like bridges and football stadiums.  If you are using cable, you have all the bandwidth afforded by a cable connection all to yourself.  You get 100 mbs of reliable speed all day long with the only person causing a problem for you is you.  No dropped connections when the classroom next door fills with students using the desktops wirelessly and they start looking at videos on Youtube.  If you are connected to the right switch, you may even get up to a gig of speed.

That's why Jax is smiling.  The need for speed.

I'm Just Saying

October 23, 2014

Microsoft is no longer the 600 lb gorilla.  Well, it's a 600 lb gorilla, but it's no longer the 600 lb gorilla.  There is a new gorilla in town, and it's name is Google.

Google began over 5 years ago, quietly building an infrastructure on which to run apps.  These apps (short for applications) are designed for smart phones...your Android phones.  You may have even seen a white, compact car with a tripod mounted on top and the Google logo emblazoned on the side.  That car was building a remarkable body of photographs.  You can use Google maps, put in an address, click on street view and pull up a 360-degree veiw of the address you were looking for.  It's amazing.  You can "stand" in the middle of the street, turn completely around in a circle and see everything.  At least everything happening when the Google camera car came by.  There are even stories of someone's grandmother being photographed in her front yard and still visible in Google maps after she had passed on.

There is Google Docs, a complete word processing suite located on Google, that you can use and store on Google.  That means no flash drives, no over-priced Microsoft Office suite, no viruses and no dogs eating homework.  If you have a connection to the internet, and you actually did the work, it's available.

There is Google drive, with 2 gigs of storage, so you can upload documents to your flash drive in the sky.  And you can make a shortcut to your Google drive on your desktop.

And it's all free.

Google is eating Microsoft's lunch and Microsoft doesn't like it.

Microsoft is missing all the cash coming in.  So what is Microsoft doing to feed it's addiction to cash?  Let's stop supporting Windows XP and force everyone to buy Windows 8.  The problem is most, if not all ATM machines run on Windows XP.

Now we are hearing of all these security breaches in banks, Target, Home Depot and places we all shop,  My debit card has been replaced by my bank, thanks to the breach at Home Depot.

A friend lost her entire paycheck, thanks to the security holes in Windows XP that Microsoft is no longer finding and plugging.  I'm wondering when someone (like Eric Holder..oh wait...he quit.) is going to file a class action suit to hold Microsoft responsible for all these security breaches on ATM machines.

In the meanwhile, get a reloadable Green Dot Visa card from CVS or Wal-Mart and use that if you shop online.  That way, your loses will be limited to $200.00 and your spending will be limited to $200.00.  Go to the cash register and buy a money pack and load the Visa card using the money pack instead of direct access to your banking account.  It's a pain, but you'll sleep better at night.

Microsoft has abandoned millions of loyal customers and some who didn't even know they were customers.  It's a jungle out there.  Just because you are in your home or at work doesn't make it any less dangerous.

Peace
