TO: All Cadets/Parents/Guardians

 

SUBJECT:  Course Syllabus/JROTC Expectations

 

 

1.  The mission of the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) is to motivate young people to be better Citizens.  The program fosters leadership through both classroom and extracurricular activities.  The key to success in the JROTC program is teamwork.  However, it is important that cadets learn to accept responsibility.  The program offers many challenging opportunities for participants to excel in life endeavors beyond the high school setting.  It can enhance a cadet’s financial status by providing scholarships to major universities/colleges across the nation.  

 

2.  Much is expected of a JROTC cadet.  He/she must exemplify the highest standards academically, morally and in appearance.  A cadet should stand out in the crowd because he/she is a proud leader.  

 

3.  The following are minimum acceptable standards:

 

  1. Appearance-uniforms must be neat and worn all day each Wednesday and Thursday (class day).  Male cadets will be clean shaven and hair well groomed so that the hair will not interfere with the fitting of the headgear.  Males will not wear earrings and the hair will not be braided, faddish hairstyles are not acceptable.  Additionally, females are permitted to wear braids, wigs, and hair extensions.  However, the instructor will explain unauthorized hair styles for both males and females.  

 

  1. Cadets will participate in all parades as mandated by the JROTC Department.

 

  1. Cadets will bring issued textbooks, workbook, iPad and notebook to every class.

 

  1. Timeliness is considered an essential element that all cadets must possess.  As such, cadets will be expected to respond to all JROTC activities in a timely manner.  Tardiness will not be accepted unless extenuating or mitigating factors exist.  

 

  1. Once a cadet is issued a uniform, it becomes his/her responsibility to safeguard and return it upon disenrollment or at the close of the school year. 

 

  1. Cadets must remain in good standing in all graded areas to receive a favorable grade. 

 

4.  Grades are earned according to the standard grading system below: 

 

90 - 100---------A

80 - 89-----------B

70 - 79-----------C

60 - 69-----------D

59 and below--F

 

5.  Grades will be calculated at the end of each nine weeks using the following criteria below: 

 

  1. Class Participation----30%

 Exams-------------------70%

 

  1. Cadets must be in good standings in all graded areas before a favorable grade can be issued.  

 

  1. There will be a Comprehensive Leadership Lab Test at the end of each semester. 

 

6.  Cadets are strongly encouraged to participate in JROTC extracurricular activities such as Color Guard, Drill Team, Rifle Team or Newspaper Editor.  Cadets will not be permitted to participate in these activities when grades drop below a 2.0 (C).  

 

7.  The Corps Motto is “TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS”.  The motto will be stated anytime the hand salute is rendered and when the cadet is called upon.

 

8.  The cadre at the JROTC Department is interested in the student’s progress; As such, the cadre will advise and assist the students upon his/her request.  

 

9.  In all cases, a cadet will be dis-enrolled when he/she---

 

  1. Withdraws from school. 

 

  1. Becomes physically unfit.

 

  1. Shows inaptitude for leadership training, as demonstrated by lack of general adaptability, want of readiness, skill, unhandiness or inability to learn.

 

  1. Fails to maintain an acceptable standard of academic achievement, conduct or attendance.  

 

  1. Shows undesirable traits of character as demonstrated by cheating on examinations, stealing, unauthorized possession or use of habit-forming drugs, LSD, marijuana, lying, conviction or adjudication as a juvenile offender, for commission of an offense which could be punished by imprisonment of one year or more under the United States Code or District of Columbia Code; frequent incidents of a discreditable nature with civil of school authorities; or similar acts.  

 

  1. Fails to maintain a requirement for enrollment.  

 

  1. Shows indifferent to and lack of interest in leadership training as demonstrated by frequent absences from class or drill, large accumulations of demerits and established patterns of shirking or similar acts.  

 

  1. Students will be dis-enrolled for failing to contact the teacher concerning make-up work within two days for excused absences.  It is not the teacher’s responsibility to pursue the student concerning make-up work or exams.
